The 43rd annual meeting of the Christian Sociological Association (formerly ACTS)

will be postponed.

Sociology at the Margins

Romans 12:16 offers the people of God the following instruction: “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.”  While this appears rather simple, compliance with Paul’s exhortation requires a profound undoing of stratified society and the cultural meanings that support and sustain it.  Living in harmony, associating with the lowly, and subordinating pride and position – ideally the distinctive ethic of the people of God – offers a subversive counternarrative to the “patterns of this world.”  Living as God’s people necessitates identifying and drawing the marginal into the center where they can share in “our” wealth, both social and material.

The Christian Sociological Association invites papers that explore various dimensions of marginality.  Topic areas probing this theme would include stratification, gender, race and ethnicity, social class, immigrants, nationalism, violence, poverty, religion, criminal justice, to name only a few.

Our theme is intentionally broad and inclusive in order to convey just how enthusiastically we welcome all submissions of a sociological nature – thematic or not.  Our conference has always had a rich assortment of presentations both on and off theme.

Abstracts of papers and presentations should be submitted to David Carlson, program chair, david.carlson48@yahoo.com
